Soapstone, typically gray in color, it's highly resistant to heat and its made up of very dense (non-porous) material, even more so than marble, slate, limestone or granite. Soapstone is especially good for bathrooms that way the walls won't stain of grow fungus through time, liquids simply can't penetrate it. Very little maintenance is required, too. All that's needed is an occasional coat of mineral oil.

Marble comes in a variety of colors, running from almost pure white to pale pinks and blues and or dramatic blacks and browns. It is susceptible to stains more than most countertops but a penetrating silicone sealer well maintained keeps it in good state.
